The hyperbolic tree visualization has been patented by Inxight (http://www.inxight.com). So, the use of an hyperbolic display, however implemented, may be illegal in the countries where the patent applies, unless Inxight agree (*).

I don't know what Inxight's patents cover but :

one may wonder if one can patent Poincaré's model of Hyperbolic geometry and to what extent hyperbolic tree visualization uses the French mathematician's ideas.
one may also consider the fisheye lens distortion and wonder if software modelization of a law of optics can be patented.
